Teacher's are provided with district, state and national standards for each subject area. The purpose of these standards is to guide teacher's in the direction of the lesson and highlight key concepts to discuss. The quote above focuses on how standards are similar to a compass. It leads the teacher into the right direction but allows the teacher to decide on the right path for lessons and units. This is where we need to think about all of the things we have learned to create the best lesson or unit for our students. This task my seem daunting and difficult to reach, but that is what our training, in school and the field, and resources have prepared us for. Using Bloom's Taxonomy is one great resource to think about when creating lesson plans. It allows for the student to develop specific skills to help with the cognitive domain. When this process is used, students can achieve a higher level of learning.
I also feel that creating lessons using Bloom's Taxonomy will benefit our students in the future. They might struggle at first with completing lessons that are based around Bloom's Taxonomy, but in the long run it will increase their ability to use higher order thinking skills. I think Bloom's Taxonomy is a great concept and that all lessons should be based around it as much as possible.
